Understanding Mobility and Independence: A Physiotherapy Volunteer's POV

Image
When a physiotherapist joins a wheelchair fitment program not just to observe, but to participate with their heart and hands, something special happens. Here is Ms.Kamaleshwari's account of volunteering with us during a fitment program, she joined us from Chettinad Academy of Research and Education. I recently had the opportunity to volunteer with Motivation India during a wheelchair fitment program conducted at IRCDS, Thiruvallur . As a physiotherapy student passionate about mobility and rehabilitation, this experience was nothing short of life-changing. It gave me not only hands-on learning but also deep insight into the dignity that comes with appropriate mobility solutions. Over the course of the program, I supported the team in the fitment of wheelchairs and was guided closely by professionals like Mr. Sudhakar (Regional Manager), Mr. Prashant (Wheelchair Technician), and Ms. Nandhini (Project Officer). Their dedication and mentorship helped me truly understand what it mean...

Bridging Knowledge with Impact: Our Volunteer Recounts

Image
As physiotherapy students, we often learn about posture, mobility, and rehabilitation in classrooms. But it’s rare to witness how this knowledge translates into real change—until we had the incredible opportunity to volunteer with Motivation India at a Wheelchair Service Program held at the Integrated Rural Community Development Society (IRCDS) . This experience was nothing short of transformative, both professionally and personally. From Theory to Practice: The Assessment Phase The program was conducted in two structured phases— assessment and fitment . During the assessment phase, we evaluated over 25 individuals with moderate to severe disabilities. For the first time, we got to apply our theoretical understanding to real-world scenarios—measuring postural needs, engaging with individuals and their families, and learning to explain the importance of using an appropriate wheelchair tailored to each person’s unique needs. We also developed our skills in patient counseling, gainin...

Overcoming Adversities through Resilience and Support

Image
As the Motivation India and Margadarshi team, navigate through the silent alleys of Kamagra located in Chamrajnagar district of Karnataka on the day of our field visit, we reached Yogesh’s house in the midst of lush greenery. As we entered, we were greeted by bright smiles from Yogesh and Maheshwari, his wife. Today, Maheshwari helps him with getting on with his work on the weaving machine and showed utmost resilience throughout the entire ordeal, Yogesh proudly shared this while the hot afternoon sun was beating down on us in the verandah. Yogesh used to be the sole earner for his family of 6, one day while working he started facing some pain in his lower back which he initially disregarded but later went to doctors when it persisted. He was put on multiple medications, yet the pain didn’t subside, Yogesh went on with the medication without knowing it would lead to something so life-altering due to the misdiagnosis. One day while in the bathroom Yogesh fainted and as he regained cons...

Strengthening Support to Wheelchair Users & their Families during COVID-19

Image
The devastating impact of COVID-19 has left a scar across India, in terms of personal, social and economic losses. While the pandemic threatens all members of society, persons with disabilities are disproportionately impacted due to attitudinal, environmental and institutional barriers that are reproduced in the COVID-19 response. Moreover, people with disabilities, particularly those from poor sections, continue to suffer severe hardship. Without access to food or money, many are faced with starvation. The aftermath of COVID-19 has also left many of the wheelchair users and their family members without jobs, with no hope of having the means of employment in near future as well. Six years old Divyashree, diagnosed with cerebral palsy has been receiving rehabilitation support through our partner organisation Margadarshi since 2019. Divyashree’s father, Gopal, a painter by profession and the sole earner of the family lost his job due to COVID-19. With the help of our donors, support...
