Bridging Knowledge with Impact: Our Volunteer Recounts

As physiotherapy students, we often learn about posture, mobility, and rehabilitation in classrooms. But it’s rare to witness how this knowledge translates into real change—until we had the incredible opportunity to volunteer with Motivation India at a Wheelchair Service Program held at the Integrated Rural Community Development Society (IRCDS).

This experience was nothing short of transformative, both professionally and personally.

From Theory to Practice: The Assessment Phase

The program was conducted in two structured phases—assessment and fitment. During the assessment phase, we evaluated over 25 individuals with moderate to severe disabilities. For the first time, we got to apply our theoretical understanding to real-world scenarios—measuring postural needs, engaging with individuals and their families, and learning to explain the importance of using an appropriate wheelchair tailored to each person’s unique needs.

We also developed our skills in patient counseling, gaining confidence in communicating with empathy and clarity. These initial interactions laid the groundwork for meaningful connections and better care outcomes during the fitment phase.

Every Fit Counts: The Fitment Phase

In the second phase, we worked alongside the technical team to help provide customized wheelchairs equipped with postural support devices. Each wheelchair was carefully fitted to ensure comfort, safety, and ease of use—not just for the individual, but also for their caregivers.

We also supported user training, guiding individuals on proper usage, daily maintenance, and basic repairs. It was empowering to see how knowledge—when shared—can give someone not only independence, but also confidence.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Before this program, our understanding of wheelchair provision was limited. We hadn’t fully grasped the complexities involved in posture care, individual assessments, or the importance of personalized seating solutions. Through hands-on experience, we now truly understand how critical it is to provide the right wheelchair—not just any wheelchair—to improve someone’s mobility, dignity, and quality of life.

The process was both challenging and rewarding, and it reinforced our belief in the importance of community service. Seeing firsthand the difference a well-fitted wheelchair can make has deepened our commitment to this field.

Looking Ahead: A Commitment to Advocacy and Research

This experience has inspired us to continue working toward better accessibility and inclusion for persons with disabilities. We are particularly keen to advance our understanding of posture care management and contribute to the field through evidence-based research.

We hope to explore topics such as the quality of life of individuals after receiving appropriate mobility aids, and how such interventions can shape policy and practice to create more inclusive communities.

A Note of Gratitude

We are immensely grateful to Sudhakar Sir and Nandhini Ma’am from Motivation India for trusting us with this responsibility and mentoring us throughout the process. Our heartfelt thanks also go to the IRCDS team for their warm hospitality and support.

This program didn’t just sharpen our clinical and technical skills—it enriched our perspective on life, resilience, and the profound impact of giving back. It has shown us the power of collaboration, compassion, and commitment in making a real difference.

We look forward to staying engaged with this cause and continuing our journey as advocates for mobility, independence, and dignity.

Because when every fit matters, every life can move forward.
